It has been proven that motivation is one of the influences on language learning success. Motivation is an integral factor in reading. As reading is a vital component of learning, motivation in reading in English plays an important role in a learners’ personal reading satisfaction as well as in academic performance. Whilst motivation is an integral factor in reading, it has been found that motivation decline when children go to school. The current study focused on individual student differences in term of self-efficacy and its relationship to the reading motivation in English of ESL learners of three levels of English proficiency namely the High, Moderate and Low Proficiency. To obtain the required data, a survey was conducted. The elicitation procedure for the data collection consisted of a series of statements regarding the relevant issues and these stimulus items were elicited in the form of self-administered questionnaires. As the decline in the intrinsic motivation to read is pronounced as students continue their studies at tertiary level, the study is targeted at ESL learners at the Matriculation Center, IIUM PJ. The findings of this study show that the subjects with high-proficiency (HEP) led the other two groups, Moderate (MEP and Low (LEP) English proficiency in terms of level of self-efficacy, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. In addition, the findings show that there is a positive correlation between self-efficacy and the intrinsic motivation for subjects with high and moderate English proficiency. Meanwhile in terms of self-efficacy and extrinsic motivation, only the subjects with high English proficiency showed positive correlation. The findings of the study will help gauge some understanding of what motivates learners of different language abilities to read in English and hopefully provide some insightful information for classroom pedagogy.
