In Malaysia, the local term for male-to-female transgender (MTF) is maknyah,pondan or bapok. The terms claimed by this community themselves. Being labeled as sexual deviants and generally discriminated by the society, the majority of the maknyah do not get a decent job. Thus, many of them end up in the sex trade. In a 2002 study on 507 maknyah, it found that 92% of the respondents had received payment for sex, even though only 54% claimed they were sex workers.
