Summary: | Current urban living condition has adverse impacts on urban resident’s health. In the past years, the number of overweight and obese people in Malaysia has increased sharply. This pandemic is associated with sedentary lifestyle. Hence, health promotion has become a prime concern in Malaysia, due to the increase in life-threatening illnesses such as diabetes, heart diseases and hypertension. This study stems from this concern and therefore sets the researchers to investigate leisure time behaviour of city residents in Kuala Lumpur city. The study reveals on city residents’ lifestyle, in terms of how they spend their leisure time, preference of place for leisure time and whether the places can modify residents’ behavior into activities that are more conducive to health. The aim of the research is to propose criteria of public space that are based on the findings of residents’ leisure time behaviour and their frequency of visits to public spaces in the city. The focus of public spaces is more on recreational parks and green spaces in six zones in Kuala Lumpur city. The criteria serve as guidelines to improve existing spaces for decision makers and also acts as a basis for health promotion in urban areas. |
