Summary:Big data is the current trend and the business community attempts to leverage it to their maximum benefit. These digitalized businesses enjoying competitive edges over their traditional business counterparts by collecting a huge quantity of information about their current customers and the potential customers. In this context, it is a timely requirement to understand how the Malaysian businesses face these challenges, especially the SMEs, because they are an integral part of the Malaysian economy. Unfortunately, it is very hard to find information on this subject in the literature. According to recent SME Corp. Annual reports, the Malaysian government has spent RM 357.3 million to encourage ICT adoption in SMEs. Indeed, the ICT adoption is a very basic enabler of the digital enterprise. In this backdrop, a proper scientific study on challenges of big data environment on Malaysian SMEs is an obligatory. Therefore, the current work aims to study the short term and long-term effects of big data on SMEs’ survival and growth, and how the SMEs respond to the challenges created by the big data environment. Finally, intends to formulate an empirically validated holistic business capability framework inclusive of socio-technical factors to compete in the big data environment. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods will be used. Interviews, observation and case studies will be conducted to understand the challenges and the responses. Then a survey will be conducted to empirically test the business capability model which will be formulated based on literature review and the findings of qualitative part. The findings of this study will help the SMEs to plan and prepare for the current business trend and the policy makers will get insights to achieve their target of globally competitive SMEs promised in SME Master Plan 2012-2020.
