Summary: | Most ESL teachers find teaching speaking skills a challenge as most students are having difficulties with speaking abilities. This study attempted to identify the effectiveness of cooperative learning strategies in promoting speaking skills among students in order to develop them into competent communicative speakers. The objectives of the study were to identify the students' speaking problems and determine workable cooperative learning strategies preferred by students in teaching speaking skills. The advantages of the preferred cooperative learning strategies as perceived by students were identified. The study involved sixty health and nursing students of Masterskill College, Kuching. The findings showed students' positive attitudes towards the cooperative teaching and learning strategies. Out of the 7 strategies employed, majority that is 40% opinioned that the group discussion is effective in promoting their speaking abilities. The overall results indicated some improvement in their speaking abilities. Hence, cooperative learning through group discussion could have significant pedagogical implications and could be practical strategies if they are carefully planned for the teaching of speaking skills among students. |
